The Golden Globes continue to be one of the most prestigious award shows of all time – even to its 77th edition. The annual Golden Globes recognize excellence in American and international TV and film. This year’s ceremony was hosted by the English comedian Ricky Gervais, who has had the opportunity to host the show five times now.
Ricky Gervais didn’t fail to let the crowd know that the 2020 edition would be his last time hosting the Golden Globes. There were several outstanding moments from the Golden Globes 2020, but Gervais’ monologue delivery was one of the most talked about. Gervais did an 8-minute monologue, passing criticism to Hollywood and touching on issues like racism, the Epstein scandal, and he even threw a jab at the celebrities who try to lecture the world (in the name of “wokeness”) after receiving an award.
Gervais Monologue Shot At Everything There Was to Talk About in 8 Minutes
Ricky Gervais’ monologue was a jab at almost everyone, from Martin Scorsese to Leonardo DiCaprio. The monologue offended big names in Hollywood, talking about Scorsese’s height and DiCaprio’s age-gap romantic escapades, amongst other things.
Gervais also dropped a joke about the box office. He said no one was in the position to come give some public lecture upon receiving an award, not from people who spent less time in school, it wouldn’t be necessary. Although he was right, it didn’t seem to strike the right nerve on some people who felt offended.
Gervais saluted everyone and welcomed them to the ceremony nicely with the initial part of his monologue before he began with himself and the NBC. He said it was his last time hosting the show after consecutive times, and he didn’t care about the show and NBC didn’t care as well.
He says they should all be ready to laugh at their expenses (there’s a doubt if that happened as many weren’t pleased).
Another thoughtful moment of Ricky Gervais’s monologue was his talk about Netflix. Everyone now watches Netflix. Netflix wins at everything and has also succeeded in winning people away from watching network TV. He says Hollywood is awful with films. They put lazy remakes and sequels out there. According to Gervais, they now do fantasy-adventure nonsense. All the best actors people love to watch on screen have moved on to Netflix and HBO.
Tom Hanks Gave a Meme for the Night
While Ricky Gervais’ jokes landed, Tom Hanks had an unimpressed reaction that gave us a meme. He was caught on camera grimacing and frowning at the monologue. The jokes didn’t land well on him. Tom Hanks later went on to give one of the best speeches of the night.
Ricky Gervais Defends His Monologue
As expected, Ricky Gervais’ monologue didn’t sit well with a lot of people, saying he roasted Hollywood. He tweeted saying he is a liberal and wouldn’t roast Hollywood for being a bunch of liberals, but he did because they proudly wore liberalism like a medal.
