YouTube on Mobile

June 17, 2007 by Hari

YouTube have today launched the mobile version of their video sharing website at m.youtube.com. The mobile interface starts with a warning message that recommends you to have Unlimited Data Plan, because “YouTube Mobile is a data intensive application”. And you should be having a mobile that supports 3GP videos.

YouTube mobile currently has limited features with videos categorized under Features, Recently Added, Most Viewed, Top Rated, Top Favorites and three other categories. It also has a small search box. But some searches return “No results for ‘keyword’. Only a portion of YouTube videos are available on mobile at this time. We are working hard to bring you more!”. Hope this grows bigger.

A Free Image-Upload Script

June 15, 2007 by Hari

Few days ago, one my friends asked me if i knew any Free Image Upload script. My answer was in negative as i didn’t know of any such scripts. I even did a google search and the results were not convincing. So, i have decided to code my very own image upload script.

I am naming this “Got Image”. I’ve already started working on it with some basic features for the first version. I’ll give updates on the progress as often as possible. Stay tuned for release.

Google’s Slideshow Viewer

June 13, 2007 by Hari

Few months ago, i removed my MS Office as it was unnecessary for me and occupied a lot of my small 40GB Hard disk. I never worried about it, as i don’t use Word, Excel or PPT much. For some days now, i have been receiving a lot Powerpoint presentations from my friends. I was not able to view them, of course, since i didn’t have any software to. My friends insisted to get an Office Suite soon. I tried ThinkFree. But it was tooooo slow for me. I then downloaded Sun Microsystem’s Open Office.

Not even a day is over since my Open Office installation, Google has released their Slideshow viewer, which is as quick as any other Google application. Now, its a lot lot easier for me to view PPTs online. I guess i might be uninstalling Open Office very soon.

Safari for Windows ?

June 12, 2007 by Hari

Apple’s Mac web browser, has today been released for Windows too. Will it be as useful as Quicktime on windows ? The answer probably might be “No”. Within few hours of the release, many started posting about bugs in Safari for windows.

  1. Thor Larholm
  2. David Maynor
  3. Ryan Naraine

But, i have always been eager to use Mac and Safari. So i grabbed a download of Safari and tried it out. Wow, i loved the interface. Now, i would badly need a Mac But as posted here, here and here, the font rendering looks horrible. I’m not sure if there is any cure. But i will continue to use Firefox. However, i’ll use Safari to test my design layouts.

Again, i love the interface very much. This is my first experience with a Mac interface. The menus, which are very similar to the ones on Yahoo’s web messenger look great with the cool shadows.

AGLOCO Viewbar released

June 7, 2007 by Hari

The very long awaited AGLOCO viewbar has been released. It was released on June 6th. For those who don’t know, AGLOCO is a “get paid to surf” program on a very large scale. You just have to install their Viewbar and start surfing the web as you usually do. Ads are displayed on the viewbar, and you’ll be paid for it. The more you surf, the more you earn.

Due to their powerful referral program, AGLOCO grew into a really big community. John Chow alone reported that he has hit about 17,000 referrals.

As per the email i received, they say :

If too many Members are downloading at the same time you may not be able to get immediate access to the Viewbar (a “timed-out” or “no access” page may appear). If this happens, please try again after a short while.

But, till now, i am unable to reach even their homepage. It continues to give me a “Connection has timed out” message. Not sure, if its the traffic, or some problem with their servers. Let me see, how much i can make surfing the web.

Microsoft Surface Computers

May 30, 2007 by Hari

Today, i came to know about Microsoft’s new Surface computers. I was simply amazed at what those tea tables (?) could do. Looks like PopularMechanics were invited to take the first look at this product. And here’s the awesome video :

What did you like in that ? I really liked the way he transfered the photo from the digital camera to the phone. Wish i had a surface computer too. And here is a video of Jeff Han demonstration this multi-touch technology :

I really can’t resist imagining what the world would be in 10 years from here.

YouOS – The No-flash Web OS

May 28, 2007 by Hari

Few days ago, we covered DesktopTwo, webOS. It was using flash for all its features. There is another Web operating system called YouOS. Unlike its competitors, YouOS is completely powered by AJAX. It uses no Flash. It might be really useful for people who don’t have Flash player. Not just for them, considering some of the cool features, i would rate YouOS higher than DesktopTwo. YouOs gives a better feeling of using a real OS than DesktopTwo.

By default your OS will have about 12 apps. And they have a very huge list of 692 apps, from which you can add more to your OS. They even allow 3rd party to develop apps for the YouOS (I am planning to develop one :D). They many features of a standard operating system such as Changing wallpapers, Shortcuts and more…

What it mainly lack is the “right-click” feature. Without this, i feel the OS is incomplete. Besides that it is perfect. However, i’d really advise them to work more on the interface. It looks a lot like a 13 year old’d HTML page.

Its only in Alpha stage now. So its a great start. Once they get better and they are out of Alpha and Beta, i’m planning to make the move from Netvibes to YouOS.

Update : Here are a few screenshots :-

Where Wolf – YouOS’s own web browser.

YouEditor – YouOS’s own WYSIWYG editor.

GabCast – Do more with your phone

May 24, 2007 by Hari

Usually i come to know about new websites (about which i have been posting) from related website. But the story behind me finding GabCast is a pretty interesting one. I was googling for a Web 2.0 generator and i found this one. I was generating some names and once i got “gabcast”. I liked the name, so i typed www.gabcast.com into my addressbar to find this nice website.

Let us come back to the topic.

Gabcast.com is a podcasting and audioblogging platform that offers virtual communities, individuals and organizations an easy way to create and distribute audio content.

The main actions that you can perform using GabCast are :

  1. Record using your phone or VoIP
  2. Create podcasts
  3. Post audio to your blogs
  4. Create audio greetings
  5. Host conference calls

It doesn’t stop here. There are lots more that you can do. Check out their overview page for more details.

Posting audio is a pretty new feature for the blogosphere. They provide 3 plans. The basic plan is obviously a free one and the other 2 don’t cost much too. They are $6/mo and $12/mo respectively.

Today’s newbie is a tomorrow’s must-have. GabCast is one such product and i wish it all the best.

PowerCursor – Create interfaces you can touch

May 20, 2007 by Hari

PowerCursor is a very creative application and website that i stumbled upon yesterday. PowerCursor is basically a Flash Toolkit with which you can create interfaces that you can touch.

Powercursor enables interaction designers to add a sense of feel to their Flash interfaces without difficult programming. The software engine consists of a set of tactile objects that can be added to any Flash project: Holes, Hills, Slopes, Roughs, Walls, Whirls, etc. that designers can use to create richer and more tactile interfaces.

I was amazed by what i experienced at the site. It was so realistic that i had the feel even after i left the websites.

They have lots of examples at their site, which are very cool. They say that it uses a principle called “Visually simulated force feedback”. A PDF document called “What you see is what you feel” is available for download, which outlines what “Visually simulated force feedback” is.
