First of all, let me try to explain you what I mean by the term “generic comments” :
These are non-genuine, non-spam comments. Unlike spam comments, these do not contain too many links. At most 1 link and at times no link at all. They try to get past Akismet by pretending to be genuine. They are mostly targeted at Dofollow blogs (includes GotChance).
I hope that was clear. At most times, these comments are also held by Akismet. Sometimes, they do evade it, when the comment is a very short and doesn’t contain any links.
Now, let me show you some examples from my own Spam Queue :
1) A very generic comment that can be used on any blog and on any post :
2) Again, a generic comment. I received the exact comment on two different posts (click to enlarge) :
3) A comment made possibly by an automated program (see below). Note that they include text from the title of the post (click to enlarge) :
Regarding the 3rd example above, nowadays there are many softwares out there that automatically post comments to a selected list of blogs. I didn’t know about these until recently when I started receiving spam comments promoting them. If you’d like to see, take a look at post-comments.com or commentposter.com.
Coming back to my question, do you allow such comments on your blog ? For new blogs, they may be increasing comment count. But, for fairly established blogs, they are a nuisance when visitors go through the comments. My personal stance is that, whenever they are caught in the Akismet spam queue, I delete them. I let them stay, if they are not caught.

My vote is for the third option.

Thanks for your explanation. I like to read it.
I do not accept ones like above which are not technically spam, but do not actually have any meaning with the above post.. But could work with probably 90% of other posts.
I normally except others however, unless i find comments like it from the same person over multiple posts. Then i delete them.
Yeah, when it is one or two here and there (like 1st example), i allow.. But, if they are repetitive like the 2nd or meaningless like the 3rd, i SPAM them..
strictly prohibited if they repeat.
If the comment/response is relevant to the original post I leave it be. I have had plenty of keyword comments that were better than some of the regulars. I can not stand the automated bot comments… very annoying!
@Chicago
That’s really strange.. I’ve not experienced anything like that..
since i just build up my blog, if they not use keyword in their name, maybe i’ll allow them. i also don’t like “robotic” or automated comment just like the 3rd example.
Good article, Hari! ?an I translate it into Russian and write in my blog (with link to you)?
I do not accept generic comments
@herinxi,
yeah, thats good, especially for new blogs..
@Diarworld,
No, that is not permitted.. But, feel free to link to this post..
Hey thx for this blog!
I think its realy hard to take one’s choice- Which comment is spam, and which comment is “real”.
Your examples are allright, keep your blogs on- Greets,Flüge
I don’t have a blog but I would allow them as long as they don’t sound to obvious spam (Those 3rd examples sound a lot xD) and say credible things about the post.
nice post..
Yeah we do. You just have to moderate them, which you should do anyway. A link is sharing knowledge which is what the internet is about.
Unless the person repeats the same comment several time I try to be understanding with these types of comments. But I guess it also depends on how many comments your blog gets… the more you get the more “picky” you can be.
Yeah, i agree with the “the more you get the more “picky” you can be” part…
No im not allow generic comments, because always spam :)
Thanks for sharing this with us, very informative.
…just kidding.
I had actually turned off/removed the URL field in my comments form, but now that I’ve had spamming under control for a while, it might be time to add it back. Besides, I check the comments daily anyway.
Thankyou about your article about generic comments
