Using The Same "Unique" Theme On Related Blogs

Ever wanted to use the same theme across different blogs that you own ? This is often done by blog networks. There are some reasons why they do it :

  1. To reduce the cost, by not having a designer design a separate theme for each blog.
  2. Branding.. When people see the same theme (with some variations) on different blogs, they’ll know that there is some relation between them.

Not just blog network, even you can do the same. If you are interested in blogging on more than one topic, you can start different blogs. You can use a single theme, with color variations.

To get a better idea of what I am talking about, I’m posting here 7 Great examples of such practices :

Envato Network

This is my favorite network that uses the variations of the same theme. All of them look as if unique. But indeed they are variations of a single design.

Apricot Media

The network itself has more than 5 blogs. But, only 2 of them use the same design.

Daily Blog Tips

Gawker Media

A very big network. For example I’ve shown three here. A very good example.

TechCrunch

crunch

A very popular network with a very nice design.

b5media

b5media

One of the biggest blog networks with over 200 blogs. All use the same design with logo and color variations. Also, the “b5media stripe” on the top conveys the relation between each other.

EnGadget

Since the left side of the header is rather plain, I’ve shown the right side in this image. Another great example.

Hope you enjoyed this. This will be a series post. In the next post I’ll deal with the necessary features of a theme to make easy and suitable for color variations. Stay tuned.

Series Posts :

  2. Creating Easily Color-Variable Themes

I think you pretty much covered the major reasons why branding is SOOO important. If people want to use different setups, then at least use similar logos across your sites to help with this.

I’m actually in the process of adding some new sites to our network, most of which will use a variation of the design you you showed above.

Great post!

Hey Kyle,

Thanks for your comments :)

It’d be even nice if you change the themes of existing blogs like Slick Affiliate, Recipe Bay etc..

Great points. I think that number 1 (cost savings) is just as important as branding. It’s the reason I intend to do use variations on the same theme for most of my future sites.

Exactly George,
As the number of blogs grow, it becomes really costly to use a unique theme for every blog..

I would have to agree with using the same theme with many blogs, it is easy to understand how you can, and would, save money by doing this. Great post.

Excellent post ! I agree with the view of using same theme on many blogs. Everytime you can’t use a unique theme for various blogs.

I don’t mind if someone uses similar themes for related blogs. In some cases it could even help getting more visitors that liked any of the other blogs and now identify as yours.
