Digital Skin Grafting
June 30, 2007 by Hari

A week ago, i posted about an animated movie and another movie called “Sivaji” from my language. Today, i heard great information about a song from that movie. Rajnikanth, who plays the lead role has a dark complexion. But throughout a 6 minutes song, he has a very white complexion. At first, i thought that it might all be the face make up. But, today i came to know that it was all Computer Graphics.

The Technique behind Dark skin to fair skin :

To begin with, Indian artists did an in-depth study of the European complexion. They found that white skin reflects more light and has less shadow when compared to dark skin and is translucent in some areas. Therefore a simple color correction of the hero’s skin would not achieve the desired effect. For the shoot a London based young white lady with a fresh complexion and flushed cheeks was chosen and with the help of Cinematographer Mr. K.V.Anand every single shot of the hero was repeated with her because lighting conditions change in every shot. After the final edit all the 630 hero shots and 630 girl shots were scanned in 4K resolution. Each of the 9000 scanned frames ware rotoscoped to separate the body parts (face, hands, legs etc.). The white lady’s skin was mapped onto the Super Star’s image using Eyeon “Digital Fusion” software. Thus the Super Star got his glowing white complexion.

There were two difficult aspects in this project. One was matching the girl’s action with the hero’s action and the second was matching both of their body proportions during mapping. Though it sounds simple, the work involved was laborious and painstaking. Great attention was paid to detail right from the shoot until the final print. It has taken 25 dedicated CG technicians almost a year to achieve this 6 ½ min. feat.

It so realistic and Kudos to Shankar for directing such world class movies. I’m awaiting his next movie. Definitely would be a treat for us.

Google pays for Gadgets
June 29, 2007 by Hari

ggventures.gifGoogle has started a new program called Google Gadget Ventures. Under this, Google has announced to pay the gadgets developers of iGoogle. This way, google is encouraging the developers to make more gadgets for iGoogle. But, currently Gadget Ventures funds only those who have already developed popular gadgets.

Gadget Ventures provides two types of funding:

  1. Grants of $5,000 to those who’ve built gadgets we’d like to see developed further. You’re eligible to apply for a grant if you’ve developed a gadget that’s in our Google gadgets directory and gets at least 250,000 weekly page views. To apply, you must submit a one-page proposal detailing how you’d use the grant to improve your gadget.
  2. Seed investments of $100,000 to developers who’d like to build a business around the Google gadgets platform. Only Google Gadget Venture grant recipients are eligible for this type of funding. Submitting a business plan detailing how you plan to build a viable business around the gadgets platform is a required part of the seed investment application process.

AdToll - Advertising Marketplace
June 29, 2007 by Hari

adtoll.gif

AdToll, a new advertising network has launched on June 18th. I came across the launch on Digital Point. I started to use it on my other site Templora.com. It currently allows advertisers to publish three types of ads : Sponsored Ads, Ad Bundles and Run of Network Ads. It allows all kinds of ads for publisher : Text Link, 468 x 60, 728 x 90 and a lot other formats. It extremely easy to set up on your site. From what i have seen so far, it looks very good and can really be the next AdBrite, if they put up bit more work on the site.

If you’d like to buy an ad on Templora, you can go here.

Google Docs Folderized
June 29, 2007 by Hari

google_docs.gifAs posted earlier, i prefer online offices over MS Office and other stand-alone office suites. I always use Google Docs for my spread sheets. They have now announced a new feature - Folders. When i was using Yahoo mail, i loved the folder thingy and here at Gmail, i loved the “Starred” folder. And now, we have both of these here at Google Docs. It has a great new look too. Hopefully they, now, need to work more on the the features available within the editors. Its very minimal now.

Here’s whats new :

  • Looking pretty - The entire document list has been given a complete visual overhaul - new icons, more content, and better organizational controls. We know users spend a lot of time here and we aim to make it feel more like home.
  • Getting organized - Almost from the day we launched people have been clamoring for folders. They’re here! Even cooler, our new folders continue to work like the tags they’ve replaced - your old tags are automatically converted to folders and documents can live in more than one folder at a time. Organizing your documents is as easy as dragging and dropping a document to a folder. We’ve also included special controls for seeing only those documents created by you or shared with a particular person.
  • Search that thinks ahead - If you’ve ever tried Google Suggest, you know how cool it is when a search engine offer suggestions as you type. Google Docs & Spreadsheets now works the same way - we offer dynamically filtered results from your document list as you type, saving you time and getting you to your documents more quickly.

Pownce - Kevin Rose’s Start up
June 28, 2007 by Hari

pownce.jpgFew days ago, it was rumored that Digg’s Kevin Rose has been working on a new startup. And now it here. It is called Pownce. The founding team of the company also includes Leah Culver, Daniel Burka, and Shawn Allen. Pownce is a way to send messages, files, links, and events to your friends. You’ll create a network of the people you know and then you can share stuff with all of them, just a few of them, or even just one other person really fast.

Kevin made the public announcement on his blog today. Its still in private beta. However, they have have a way to request invitations and i have requested one. Hope i get it soon.

pownce.gif

Right now, there are four basic things you can send: messages, links, files, and events.

You might send an event out to a dozen of your friends letting them know you’re hosting a party this Friday. They could easily get the event details you entered, respond with questions or comments and then quickly rsvp.

Say you had a great photo you wanted to share with all of your friends. Just add the file and all of your friends will get it right away. They’ll be able to reply and tell you if it’s cool. You could even post songs you recorded in your home studio to share with your friends.

Guy Kawasaki’s Truemor was talked all over the web. But it turned out to be a failure. Now Pownce is being talked all over the web since Kevin is behind it. Hope this doesn’t end up with the same story as Truemor.

My Odiogo Podcast
June 24, 2007 by Hari

odiogo.jpgToday, i received a mail from Odiogo informing me that my blog has been accepted and a podcast feed was created. I visited the given link eagerly. But i was disappointed. Here is the link. They also linked me to a HTML page that had the feeds along with a player. It is here.

This page has links that allows the 1-click subscription of your Odiogo feed to major podcast clients (iTunes, Juice). The play button next to each item of the feed allows listening to the mp3 file on the PC or on a smartphone.

But that didn’t satisfy me too. Also, as on Talkr, the Text-to-speech conversion was not as accurate as it is on Feed2Podcast. Odiogo also has a Wordpress plugin that adds a link to listen to every post. But, I didn’t try it as i am very much happy with what i have now.

So, after seeing all these, i’d like to recommend Feed2Podcast to anyone who is looking for a Blog to Podcast conversion service.
